Monday
After settling into
our new homes – work had to begin. Our
first activity on the agenda was to make compost in Bissiga, the training
center for APIL. After a 30-minute
exhilarating bus journey, we finally arrived and were given a tour of the
center. During this tour, we were shown the various plants that are grown eg.
cucumbers and strawberries as well as a lesson on the methods used to make sure
that farmers could grow an optimum yield. Alas, the good times had to end and
the hard labor had to start. As new naïve volunteers, I think it’s fair to say,
we were not ready for the brutal and unrelenting sun that plagued us throughout
the day. However, displaying the ICS values of perseverance and dedication, we
soldiered on and began making compost.
Lundi
The
first thing we learnt about compost making, is that it is a long process which
consists of 6 layers. But to quickly
break it down, it consists of:
-
6 cans of water
-
3 wheelbarrows of dry leaves
-
3 wheelbarrows of manure
-
4 spades of phosphate
-
4 spades of ash
-
6 cans of water
This was then repeated 6 times. Although, physically
challenging it was important for us to see the number of stages it takes to
produce something that seems so simple.
- 06 CANETTES D’EAU
- 03 BROUETTES DE FEUILLES
SECHES
- 03 BROUETTES DE FUMIER
- 04 PELLES DE PHOSPHATE
- 04 PELLES DE CENDRE
- 06 CANETTES D’EAU
Procède qui a été répète 06 fois.
Bien
Tuesday
After a labor intensive first day, we retreated into the
office to start brainstorming our team plan.
As a team, we came up with activities that we may be able to carry out
during our placement in Zinaire. We’re
given five categories consisting of: Awareness Raising, Training, Action
Research, Resource Development and Community Networks. After a couple of hours of brainstorming, we
had some concrete ideas that we have already started developing. It was our
first opportunity working as a team and although some aspects were challenging;
we worked together to come up with a strong and cohesive plan.
Wednesday/Thursday
The creation of our team plan meant that we were finally
able to discuss the roles that we wanted. After a very feverish five-minute
application period – we finally discovered our roles. It was clear that we were
now entering the real world, real fast. What followed was more planning and
discussion with our team leaders so that we could feel comfortable within our
roles.
Friday – Planting Moringa
We ended our week with another activity, giving us an
opportunity to leave the confines of the office. We aimed to plant 100 Moringa
trees so that we could learn about their importance of them and the methods
used to grow them. There will be further
information in a future blogpost.
