Interview with Mme Kambouélé Léa

Je suis Mme Kambouélé Léa, chargee de suivi évaluation a l’ONG APIL. Je m’occupe par ailleurs du projet PARMEC PC (Projet d’Appui pour le Renforcement des Moyens d’Existence des Communautés par la promotion du Bien Etre Animal/Plateau Central) qui est un projet de promotion du bien-être des équités.

Please can you introduce yourself?

I am Ms Kamboule Lea, in charge of monitoring and evaluation at the NGO APIL. I also take care of the project PARMEC PC (Support Project for the Strengthening of the Means of Community Existence by the promotion of Animal Welfare / Central Plateau) which is a project to promote equine welfare.

En quoi consiste le projet Brook dans lequel vous travaillez ?

C’est un projet qui consiste à renforcer les moyens d’existences des communautés par la promotion du bien être des équités pour un changement de comportements envers les ânes. Par le changement il s’agit de renforcer les capacités par des formations, des sensibilisations, faire comprendre aux populations que l’âne aussi a besoin d’entretien comme les autres animaux tels les bœufs, les moutons, les chèvres…Ainsi l’âne une fois entretenu contribue a renforcer les activités, contribue à accroitre les rendements, que ce soit dans l’agriculture ou les autres activités que les communautés mènent. Si l’âne est entretenu, il contribue plus aux besoins des communautés.

What is the Brook project in which you are working?

It is a project that consists in reinforcing the means of existence of the communities by promoting a change of behavior towards the donkeys. To change, it is a matter of strengthening capacities through training, raising awareness, making people understand that the donkey also needs maintenance like other animals such as oxen, sheep, goats ... Thus the donkey once sustained helps to strengthen activities, contributes to increased yields, whether in agriculture or other activities that communities do. If the donkey is maintained, it contributes more to the needs of the communities.

Quels sont les bénéfices de ce partenariat avec Brook pour APIL et pour ses bénéficiaires ?

L’avantage de ce projet pour les bénéficiaires c’est les nouvelles connaissances qu’on leur apporte par rapport à l’entretien de leurs animaux notamment dans le domaine de la santé animale, l’alimentation, l’habitat, l’interaction même que nous avons avec nos animaux et les différents modes de communication que nous avons avec eux. Cela contribue à renforcer de façon générale l’entretien du cheptel que le ménage a, et de cela nous faisons un lien avec la sécurité alimentaire. L’âne est un des piliés des communautés. C’est l’âne qui aide dans les travaux champêtres, il aide aussi dans les activités génératrices de revenus, dans les familles ou il est utilisé pour le transport des marchandises, des agrégats, pour la construction.      Ainsi l’âne est le premier outil des producteurs et un producteur qui n’a pas d’âne est considéré comme un producteur vulnérable. Donc l’âne comme moyen de production, si nous l’entretenons bien, il contribue à nos activités, aux revenus des ménages. Il contribue à lutter contre l’insécurité alimentaire des communautés.

What are the benefits of this partnership with BROOK for APIL and its beneficiaries?

The benefit of this project for the beneficiaries is the new knowledge they have gained regarding the maintenance of their animals, in particular in the field of animal health, food, habitat, the very interaction that we have with our animals and the different modes of communication we have with them. This contributes to a general reinforcement of the maintenance of the livestock that the household has, and of this we make a link with the food security. The donkey is one of the pillars of the communities. It is the donkey that helps in the rural work, it also helps in income-generating activities, in families where it is used for the transport of goods, aggregates, for construction. Thus the donkey is the first tool of producers and a producer who does not have a donkey is considered a vulnerable producer. So the donkey as a means of production, if we keep it well, it contributes to our activities, to household incomes. It contributes to the fight against food insecurity in the communities.

Que pensez-vous qui puisse être amélioré pour la bonne marche du projet Brook ?

Pour la bonne marche de ce projet, il faut une synergie d’actions au niveau des zones d’intervention parce que le projet touche l’aspect santé animale qui ne relève pas forcement de APIL mais aussi des agents techniques de l’état qui sont habilitées à porter des soins ou des examens cliniques aux ânes, donc ces vraiment demander une grande synergie avec ces acteurs. Il y a d’autres acteurs qui viennent en liste par rapport à l’entretient des animaux dont les fabricants des matériaux d’harnachement pour les ânes, ceux aussi qui font le parage des sabots des animaux ; il y a tout un secteur d’économie autour de l’âne donc nous pensons que plus de synergie avec ces acteurs va contribuer à l’atteinte les objectifs que le projet s’est fixé et du côté d’APIL nous allons renforcer la communication, la visibilité de ce que nous faisons pour atteindre un public plus large par rapport à la question du Bien-être animal.

What do you think can be improved for the Brook project?

For this project to run smoothly, there is a need for synergy of action at the level of the intervention zones because the project concerns the animal health aspect, which is not necessarily the responsibility of APIL but also the technical agents of the State. These agents are Empowered to carry care or clinical examinations to donkeys, so these really require a great deal of synergy with these actors.

There are other actors who come to the list in relation to the maintenance of animals, including the manufacturers of harnessing materials for donkeys, and those who make the hooves of animals; There is a whole sector of economy around the donkey so we think that more synergy with these actors will contribute to the achievement of the objectives that the project has set and on the side of APIL we will strengthen communication , The visibility of what we are doing to reach a wider audience in relation to the issue of animal welfare.

Quel message avez-vous à passer en tant que collaboratrice d’APIL, et aussi actrice dans le projet Brook ?

Le message que nous avons à passer est que le projet PARMEC/PC est un projet novateur et nous voulons à travers ce projet contribuer d’une façon ou d’une autre à améliorer les moyens d’existence des communautés et les conditions de vie de l’âne parce que c’est un être comme les autres. Il a donc besoin de compassion, d’être entretenu, de prise en charge. Donc c’est un appel aux autres acteurs de la filière pour nous aider avec des sensibilisations et nous pensons que petit à petit la question du bien-être animal va être mieux promue au niveau du Burkina Faso.

What message do you have to spend as an APIL collaborator, and also actress in the project Brook?

The message we have to pass is that the PARMEC / PC project is an innovative project and we want through this project to contribute in one way or another to improve the livelihoods of the communities and the living conditions of the ass because it is a being like the others. He therefore needs compassion, to be looked after, to take charge. So it is a call to the other actors of the sector to help us with sensitization and we believe that the issue of animal welfare will be promoted more and more in Burkina Faso.
